Terlingua
Big Bend National Park
Ghost town stories, endless stars, and discovering the beauty of the desert after dark.
Tucked into the high desert of West Texas, Terlingua is a place where history and landscape intertwine. Once a thriving mercury mining community in the early 1900s, the town gradually faded as the mines closed, leaving behind weathered stone ruins, abandoned buildings, and stories that still echo through its dusty streets. Today, that rich history lives alongside a small but vibrant community of artists, adventurers, and travelers who have fallen in love with its rugged charm.
While many visitors come for nearby Big Bend National Park, Terlingua offers an experience all its own. Its remote location, far from the glow of city lights, places it beneath some of the darkest skies in North America, where thousands of stars emerge each evening and the Milky Way stretches from horizon to horizon. By day, the desert feels vast and peaceful. By night, it transforms into one of the most extraordinary places in Texas to experience the universe above.
There's a magic to Terlingua. It encourages you to slow your pace, embrace the stillness, and discover that some of the most memorable moments happen long after the sun has disappeared below the desert horizon.
One evening, we wandered over to the little chapel in Terlingua with cameras, tripods, and more curiosity than a plan. As the last light disappeared behind the mountains, the desert grew still. We laughed through missed shots, experimented with light painting beneath the old adobe walls, and watched a simple flashlight turn into something unexpectedly beautiful. It was one of those moments that reminded us that sometimes creativity happens under an open sky with good friends rather than in a studio or with a plan.
Later that night, we made our way to Santa Elena Canyon and waited. There wasn't much to do except look up. Little by little, the stars multiplied until the Milky Way stretched across the entire sky, brighter than any of us had imagined. We stood there longer than we needed to, taking it all in while our cameras traced the slow movement of the stars overhead. Somewhere between the shutter clicks and the silence, time seemed to slow down.
Some of our favorite memories came from simply wandering Terlingua itself. Weathered stone ruins, rusted relics, and stories from its mining days gave the ghost town a character all its own. Every corner felt like another page from an old history book, reminding us that some places don't need to be polished to leave a lasting impression.
We left with dusty boots, memory cards full of stars, and a renewed appreciation for the quiet beauty that can only be found after dark.
